Pont Neuf: The Oldest "New" Bridge in Paris
Pont Neuf, despite its name which translates to “New Bridge” in English, is actually the oldest bridge in Paris. The bridge was constructed between 1578 and 1607, during the reigns of Henry III and Henry IV of France.
The bridge connects the left and right banks of Paris, specifically the 1st and 6th arrondissements, and crosses the western end of the Île de la Cité, the island in the middle of the Seine. Pont Neuf is composed of two separate spans, one of five arches joining the left bank to the Île de la Cité, and another of seven arches linking the island to the right bank. The bridge is constructed of stone and has a total length of 232 meters (761 feet).
Pont Neuf was the first bridge in Paris to be built without houses on it, as was common in the Middle Ages. It was also the first to have pavements, which made it a popular spot for pedestrians. The bridge features an equestrian statue of King Henry IV, which was installed in 1614. The statue was destroyed during the French Revolution but was later rebuilt in 1818.
